The Croatian Tourist Board reports that tourist overnight stays have increased by 5% per cent this year compared with 2006. The year’s target of a two per cent increase in numbers and a three to five per cent increase in revenue seem to be easily achievable according to the Croatian Tourist Board director Niko Bulic. Numbers for nautical tourism show a more spectacular increase with a 19 per cent increase in the number of foreign yachts and a 23 per cent increase in charters.
Slobodna Dalmacija, a Croatian daily newspaper, also reported on a survey carried out this week. 500 people were questioned from Zadar to Dubrovnik. The survey concludes that the German Tourists are, by far, the most numerous (42.4%), followed by Italians (18.2%), Czechs (16.4%), Austrians (15.2%). British visitors came sixth in number (9.6%), just pipping the French at 9.2%, a reversal of positions from previous years. Interviewees were asked whether they considered themselves to be part of “mass tourism” or “elite tourism” with 45.1% put themselves in the latter category.
Statistics, as we know, can be flawed and the above sample is quite small. On what we’ve seen, the number of apartments with guests near us seems to be down on previous years but the beaches are certainly busy so maybe it’s the newer hotels that are proving to be the attraction.

Our final statistic is that Zagreb Airport achieved its one millionth passenger on 10th July 2007. This was not achieved until August 8th last year.
